List three jobs you’d consider pursuing if money didn’t matter.
I’m currently a nurse and it was my first choice when I was in 4th year of high school.
Well, actually, it was the only thing in mind before I turned 15 because it was the one degree that my family wanted me to pursue as, from what they said, it will get me to work abroad easily and is considered to be a money-maker. 2 of my cousins are nurses working in Saudi Arabia and they seemed to be thriving so I thought, I wanted to be like that.
Then came my last year of secondary school. Someone from a university went over to our school and started discussing about different courses. Then came that point when he started discouraging us to take up Nursing because there is an oversupply of nurses in the country. Apparently, the number was excessive that many had either worked for other jobs, or paid companies to let them work at hospitals just to gain experience. I was disheartened, so I started weighing my options.
Since then, I had been thinking about two other degrees: Engineering and Architecture.
A few of my classmates wanted to become engineers and they said you had to be good at math so it will be easier to get the degree. I enjoyed, and I was good at it, so I listed it down after Nursing as my 2nd choice.
Architecture is what got my attention, and the only course that no one had to influence me to consider. I had also been doing art, so it piqued my interest for it.
The only reason why I did not even have the slightest chance of really putting them on paper is because of my parents. They discouraged me from even considering the 2 courses because for them, being an engineer doesn’t generate as much money as a nurse does, and the nearest college that offers Architecture is over an hour of driving or bus ride away, and they didn’t want me to leave home.
So over 13 years after my graduation, I am where I currently am right now because of my decision to be a nurse. 4 years of college, 5 years working at a local hospital with gaps totaling 1 year in between, and now, 3.5 years working here in the UK and counting.
Since hitting adulthood, there were 2 more jobs that I didn’t know was possible when I was younger: being a fine artist, or an author.
As I said, I had been doing art, and currently the type of arts that I do is portraits with graphite, and have been dabbling with watercolour every now and then, so it would’ve been fun to be able to explore outside of my comfort zone.
As for being an author, I had been reading books since I was 8 years old, and there was an era in my college years when I was writing fanfiction and posting them on the internet. I might have tried to create my own storyline as well, but found it a bit hard to do something longer than a 2-part story, so that is another dream crushed.
And there you have it. My entire story on there different jobs I wanted to experience, and the one that I currently have.
